Snoring and Sleep Apnea

When you sleep, the muscles in your body relax so they can begin to repair themselves to keep you healthy and active every day. However, muscles in your mouth and throat also relax during sleep, and for some people, these muscles, along with soft fatty tissues, relax to the point where they fall back into the upper airway and block the flow of oxygen from coming in. Your brain responds by partially waking to send signals to the respiratory system to work harder to get past the obstruction. This is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Left untreated, sleep apnea can cause tiredness during the day or more serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure therapy) is the most widely used device to treat sleep apnea.  Patients wear a mask during the night over their nose and/mouth and an air blower forces air to help prevent airway tissues from collapsing.  These masks can cause irritation, accidentally be removed while sleeping at night, cause dry nasal passages, or claustrophobia.

Depending on the level of severity of their sleep apnea, patients may benefit from an oral dental appliance instead.

Oral Dental Appliance Pros:

  • There is less equipment to become tangled in during sleep or knock-off during the night.
  • Oral devices do not force air into your nasal passages therefore you will not suffer from a dry, itchy nose.
  • Oral dental devices are more comfortable to wear versus CPAP masks.
  • They are compact and easier to travel with.

Why Choose Dawson Dental Dental to Help Treat Your Sleep Apnea

We can provide our patients with a complete sleep test to do in the comfort of your own home.

  • Our approach to a better night’s sleep is to first evaluate whether you are a candidate by conducting a detailed screening process. This includes medical history as well as an examination of the mouth, neck, and head.
  • After the examination, our specialists may recommend the Take-Home Sleep Test which can be done in the comfort of your own bed, no overnight stays in a sleep clinic required!
  • A licensed medical doctor will then evaluate your data and results and provide us, along with your family physician, the results.
  • As each patient is different, your diagnosis may include snoring issues, or light, moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnea. Working with your doctor, we will help determine the best treatment option for you.
  • If an oral appliance is the best solution, a fully trained DDS will fabricate a customized one for you.
